If you're in one of the work-from-home jobs Australia has seen an increasing number of over the last few years, you'll know that it's a way of working that offers many benefits. However, there's one thing that can put a real crimp in your plans: a weak internet connection that keeps slowing you down. In this blog, we offer up some advice on how to solve the problem.

Why Is Australian Internet Speed So Bad?

Believe it or not, Australia is ranked pretty much at the bottom of the pile when it comes to international internet speeds. We come in at 68th out of 177 nations - putting us in last place in the developed world. It's largely due to our internet infrastructure, which is made up of old copper wiring.

What's needed in the modern world is super-fast fibre optic cabling, but it requires an investment that has yet to be made. The good news is, however, that if you are in a work-from-home job and you're having internet issues, you can do several things to improve the situation.

How Can I Boost My Home Wifi In A Large House?

A typical home internet setup involves a connection and a wireless router that beams connection across your home. The trouble is houses come in all shapes and sizes, and certain materials in your home’s structure can block the signal and leave you disconnected. So, keep reading as we look at some of the steps you can take to boost your signal to ensure you remain connected and productive.

  • Install A Wifi Extender

Our first option is to install an appropriately-name WiFi extender, which connects to your router either by plugging it into a spare socket in the wall or wirelessly. This device pushes the signal further through the house, past the obstructions that both small and large houses feature. It's a popular gadget in Australia, as it works and is often the only solution required.

  • Purchase a WiFi Antenna

Another solution to a weak WiFi signal is to purchase a WiFi antenna to boost the signal throughout your home again. Antennas that come as standard with modern routers are often not powerful enough for larger homes or those with problematic materials in their structure, but a high-gain antenna can, and the great thing is, they're available affordably from any good electronics retailer.

  • Use An Ethernet Cord Instead

If you're not having much luck with a wireless router for your working-from-home jobs, why not think about connecting via an older ethernet cord? Wired connections can be as much as 10x faster than WIFI, meaning swapping for a wire could be a real game-changer in speed and productivity. They were super cheap too!

  • Move Your WiFi Router

If you don’t like the sound of spending money to rectify the problem, you could always try moving the router itself. If the available cord allows for it, you might be able to move it past the obstacle or wall that's causing your problems. The nearer it is to where you work, the less there will be in the way, interrupting your WiFi signal.

As we can see, you can take several measures to improve your signal and productivity. They don’t have to cost the earth and can turn a poor signal into one that lets you work and reach your full professional potential.
