As you’ll learn early on when taking tafe fitness courses, the range of roles open to you in the fitness industry are quite considerable. Depending on the route you take, you could be a cruise ship fitness instructor, a regular gym-based personal trainer or even a physiotherapist - to name but three options.

Is The Personal Training Industry Oversaturated?

Actually, no. Far from it, actually. There’s always a high demand for fitness and nutrition courses  - because there’s a high demand for trained fitness staff! However, what we look at here is one of the many specialisation niches you can move into - strength and fitness coaching.

So, What Is Better, Strength Training Or Conditioning?

The answer to that question largely depends on what you want to achieve, but ideally, you want to have both - which is why the two disciplines of strength training and conditioning are grouped. Usually, working with people in competitive sports it’s a fascinating role to consider as a career change.

The Responsibilities Of A Strength & Conditioning Coach

A strength and conditioning coach helps train performance-based athletes and clients of all skill levels and ages. As short courses in fitness demonstrate, while overall fitness is a given, the focus for this kind of pro is on enhancing motor skills and performance, thereby reducing the risk of injury.

Depending on the client, the training can involve a combination of the following:

  • Power training
  • Speed & agility training
  • Skills-related drills
  • Balance training
  • Flexibility training

The strength and conditioning coach must have extensive knowledge of how the human body adapts to stress to perform this role. To gain this insight, a high quality of personal development is required, and it can be obtained via experience in a more general position or through study.

Recovery also plays a big part in the thinking of a strength and conditioning coach, as does mental and physical fatigue. Those you’re coaching rely on you to advise them on the optimum frequency and type of exercise to avoid injury and achieve top performance, so things must be done right.

Working Alongside Other Sports Professionals

When working in this role, you might be required to collaborate closely with other fitness professionals, particularly when supporting athletes involved in team sports. Assistant and head coaches alike will task you with ensuring that their top players are at their peak levels when they need them.

As tafe fitness courses show, when working in team sports, you’ll be part of a team yourself, as you won’t be involved in treating injuries, just preventing them. In this kind of scenario, that’s the job of the physio (another interesting fitness position), so when an injury occurs, you refer them to the appropriate specialist.
