As a parent or educator of young children, you’re responsible for maintaining their emotional well-being, and an essential skill required is the ability to spot the behavioural signs of children when they become unhappy or otherwise bothered by something. Understanding child psychology is essential, as it plays a big part in the considerations needed when providing care.

At the end of the day, it’s your parenting plan and your child, so you’re best placed to understand what normal behaviour looks like for them. However, it’s certainly worth bearing in mind that we’re talking about sustained changes in behaviour, so you shouldn’t be overly worried if the following signs only happen every now and again.

As A Parent Or Educator Remember: No Two Children Are Ever The Same

Of course, you don’t need to take an online parenting course to understand that all children are unique and require different things, but there are sure signs that tend to apply to everyone. The sustained changes in behaviour you might encounter include:

  1. Drastic or unusual changes - if your child is usually shy and suddenly becomes aggressive, this is a warning sign, as is the case if your child is typically outgoing and then suddenly becomes withdrawn. So, basically, anything that’s out of the ordinary.
  2. Frequent mood swings - another sign that a parenting course can help you identify is when your child has frequent changes in their mood that seem to have no root cause.
  3. Constant moaning about physical issues - complaining of headaches and stomach aches can be another way of getting your attention, but of course, you’ll need to double-check that it’s not an actual illness rather than a made-up one.
  4. Bedwetting - if your child has already mastered dry nights and suddenly starts having issues again, it’s another sign that things aren’t ok.
  5. Nightmares - whilst an occasional bad dream is not too much cause for worry, persistent nightmares are a symptom of general unhappiness.
  6. Not wanting to go to school - it’s important for your child to attend school to ensure their literacy skills and numeracy skills aree developed; however, if they start either refusing to go or telling you that they don’t want to go, you should sit up and take notice.

When you’re aware that something is not as it should be, either as a parent or a teacher, you can take steps to help your child address whatever it is that’s bothering them. That said, the key to being able to do so rests on your ability to spot the signs, so you can address things nice and early.
