When you look at the key areas of child development, you have numeracy, literacy, social skills and the ability for creativity and self-expression. Developing creativity in young minds is central to their self-confidence, self-esteem and much more besides, but what if you’re struggling to think of ways to provide it to allow your child or children you’re teaching to enjoy the benefits?

While investing in art materials is a good start, getting it right involves more effort and forethought than that. So if you’re looking for inspiration, we now look into a few ways to get there. By reading this blog or investing in a short course, you will better know how to get started.

Offering Examples to Spark Inspiration In Your Child's Learning

When you put a blank piece of paper in front of anyone, it can be a little daunting, resulting in a creative block; however, if you’re able to offer some examples of pictures either you or other children have done, they’ll get the inspiration they need. It’s not high-level child psychology as such, but it can kind of break the ice and get things moving.

Provide a Diverse Range of Art Materials

If you want to increase the scope of a child’s artistic imagination, try providing them with a comprehensive, diverse range of materials with which to create. Of course, you’ve got traditional materials like paper, clay, glue etc, but you’ve got total freedom to choose, so why not try introducing things like birdseed, old newspapers, lego bricks or even felt?

Focus On the Process - Not the End Result

Where child psychology can help rather than hinder in the creative sphere is in the acceptance that the required end result might not be achieved. Experimentation doesn’t always end in a favourable outcome, but it’s an essential element, so try and make your child aware of the importance of the process rather than what comes out the other side of it.

Try & Encourage Collaboration With Others

As any good parenting course will tell you, learning how to adopt the ideas of others and incorporate them into a creative project is another critical part of child development. So, you should try - where possible - to pair up kids that you think might work well together and see what they come up with - you might just be surprised at the result!
