Children are as complex as they are amazing, and as a parent, you get to witness them pass through each and every stage of development - one reason why it’s so rewarding. One of the most important stages of growing up is potty training, and some kids find it harder than others, but the good news is that help is at hand in the form of an online parenting course.

We’ll give you details about how educational professionals and parents can access this online training a little later, but we’ll start by offering up some tips that you might find helpful in your potty training efforts - five to be exact! So, let’s dive straight in.

Potty Training Tip 1 - Introduce the Subject Through Stories

When starting out on the potty-training journey, providing parental guidance through stories can be really helpful. Many books at your local library talk about the topic, and the great thing about them is that they use language that young children understand. Then, they’ll not see it as something completely new when it comes around in real life.

Potty Training Tip 2 - Allow Fun Into Proceedings

Another important element to include in your potty parenting plan is fun, as it makes everything less daunting for your toddler. Perhaps use stuffed toys and encourage them to pretend and teach their dolls how to use the potty themselves and always, but always try to use a positive and fun tone of voice that makes them feel like there’s no pressure involved.

Potty Training Tip 3 - Provide Support Where You Can

While the ultimate goal is to get your child to use the toilet without your help, they are going to need it, to begin with. Positive parenting in this sphere will involve learning how to recognize the way they act when they’re feeling like they need to go to the toilet and taking action when you see these behaviours by perhaps saying, “You need to use the potty?” rather than “what are you doing?”

Potty Training Tip 4 - Let Them Run Free Where Appropriate

What can also help with potty training is allowing them to run about naked, where it’s appropriate. During warmer weather, it can be good to let them run free in the backyard where accidents won’t matter so much and then with a travel potty outside, they can learn how to do things in their own good time.

Potty Training Tip 5 - Give Them Space at The Right Time

Our last tip uses a little child psychology, and it’s for use once they’ve had a bit of success. After they’ve started to follow what you’ve taught them and they start to use the potty without asking, it’s time to start taking a more ‘hands-off’ role. Also, if an accident does happen, try not to make a big fuss about it, as it might make them more nervous about it happening again.
