If you’ve ever tried to fly with a toddler in tow, you’ll know that you’re filled with a fear that a) it will be really tough keeping them happy and b) everyone else on the plane will end up hating you. You’re absolutely not alone if you think this way.
Take an Aviation Australia cabin crew course, and you’ll get an understanding of how people cope in this kind of scenario, but for the general public, it can be tricky. To aid you in this regard, we now look at five handy tips for you to use if and when you must take a flight with a little one.
Tip #1 - One Last Diaper Change Before You Fly
We’ll start with a step that's nice and easy to implement - changing your little one’s nappy one last time before you step on board your flight. Potty training is difficult at the best of times, but when you have to pop to the tiny restrooms they have on planes, it gets quite a bit more difficult. When you get on board, a clean diaper is a good way to minimise these trips.
Tip #2 - Buy a Seat for Your Child
Something you’ll learn in aviation and hospitality management courses is that children under the age of 2 can usually fly for free when they sit on your lap. However much money this might save you, it can make things really tough and uncomfortable on a long flight. What’s more, it’s safer for them to have their own seatbelt should there be any unexpected turbulence.
Tip #3 - Try Renting Baby Gear from the Airline
Travelling with kids generally means travelling ‘heavy’, but you can lighten this load and make things much easier for yourself and your child by renting baby travel gear. It’s possible to rent car seats, cribs, high chairs and harnesses for you to pick up when you land at the destination airport, and the cost is covered by what you’ll save by being able to check in less gear when you fly.
Tip #4 - Pack Twice as Much Baby Gear as You Need
You don’t need to take aviation courses online to know that kids can be difficult when they’re tired and irritated. This might mean changing them more often than you usually would under normal conditions. Our advice would be to pack twice as much as you need so you don’t end up running out during the flight.
Tip #5 - A Bottle On Take-Off & Landing
As basic aviation courses will teach you, the times that you need to control your children the most (for their own safety) are during take-off and landing. For this reason, it’s a great idea to give them a bottle to keep them calm during both of these manoeuvres. By the time they’ve finished and you’ve burped them, it should all be over!
