If you’re new to the job world having just finished taking your tafe online courses, the big wide world can look very exciting and full of possibilities. However, it can also look very daunting, but don’t worry, as it’s the same for everyone at the beginning. Plus, here we offer some career counselling advice on what to do in 24 hours prior to that extensive first interview.

What questions do they ask in interviews?

That depends on the job and the interviewer, but typically, they’ll be asking questions to determine your suitability for the role. You should also know a little about the company and things like where you see yourself in the future. For more on this, take a look at our blog that’s dedicated to it.

I get nervous when I face interviews. How can I overcome it?

Ok, so it’s awesome news that you’ve got your very first interview, but it’s 24 hours away and you’re sitting there worrying about how it will go. However, there are some beneficial things you can be doing with this time rather than simply being anxious. Let’s see what they are.

  • Firm Up How You’re Going to Get There - whatever you’re going for in terms of recruitment online or otherwise, you absolutely shouldn’t be late. So, you can identify exactly where it is, how you’re going to get there and how long it will take. If it’s close enough, why not carry out a dry run just to be sure? It’s something you’ll be glad of the following day.
  • Practice What You’re Going to Say - it can be nerve-wracking answering questions for the very first time on the big day. What will make it much easier is if you put some time into practising your answers either in a mirror or in a ‘mock interview’ scenario with a friend. It can be a useful exercise, especially if you get feedback about your performance.
  • Get Your Outfit Ready - ask yourself…do you know where your tie is? Are your shoes polished? Getting your clothes ready the night before provides a certain calmness that the job is taken care of, especially if you iron everything too. Preparedness is covered in career counselling for a reason, so get prepped early, and it will serve you well.

And on the morning of the interview…

  • Have a relaxing bath - after a good night’s sleep; we’d recommend taking a bath - a slow one that allows you to relax into the day. If you relax through exercise, go for a run beforehand to rid yourself of more of those pre-interview nerves. A calm you will perform better when it matters.
  • Enjoy a Good Breakfast - if you go into your interview on an empty stomach, it has a habit of derailing your abilities through distraction. Make sure you have a hearty breakfast or lunch full of brain foods like seeds, nuts or fish and you’ll feel more alert and ready to succeed!
