Dogs are incredible, with loyal instincts and loving personalities; they’re very much man’s best friend. Taking an Online Vet Assistant course will show you that keeping them fit and healthy is a tremendous responsibility that falls to dog owners - who invariably want them to live long and happy lives.

Why is yearly pet care so expensive?

Well, that depends on whether you’re talking about food or vet costs, but one thing is for sure, when you look after your pooch correctly, you do much to keep your yearly bill to a minimum. That’s why you should keep reading on, as we offer some helpful guidance on the matter.

What are the fundamental activities of pet care?

As animal care Tafe courses teach us, there are certain basics that must be attended to, and as your dog’s owner, it’s something only you can do. So, make sure you’ve got a notepad and pen handy as we now look through 5 extremely useful dog care tips that will extend their lifespan.

Tip #1 - A Good Quality Diet is a Must

In order for your dog to have a healthy wet nose, bright eyes, and lustrous coat, a healthy diet is vital. We’re talking about approved foods that provide all the nutrients and vitamins they need, along with bones and other things that help to keep their teeth clean.

Not only will this ensure your dog has a healthy immune system, but it will also keep your mutt’s mind, joints and digestive system in top form.

Tip #2 - Don’t Over-feed Your Dog

You don’t necessarily have to take a vet assistant course  to know that if your dog is overweight, they’re more likely to encounter health problems. In fact, canine obesity is a significant issue that can reduce your dog’s life by as much as 2-3 years, causing many joint problems.

As with humans, dog obesity is also linked with diabetes and heart problems, so try and limit the treats and keep their meal portions in check.

Tip #3 - Ensure Your Vet Sees Your Dog Periodically

Something else that will help extend your pooch’s life is taking them to visit your vet assistant regularly. This is something that applies to all pets, of course, as it guarantees that they get their shots as they’re supposed to, and any small issues are picked up before they worsen.

Not only is this far better for your dog as their health is monitored closely, but it will also ensure that your vet bills are kept nice and low.

Tip #4 - Your Dog’s Mouth Should Be Nice & Clean

Anyone who takes a leap of faith and makes a career change in the animal care industry will quickly learn the importance of canine oral cleanliness. Dental issues are common in dogs and cats, which can be caused by dirty mouths, but that’s not all, as this can also lead to heart and kidney problems.

As well as taking your dog to the vet for checkups, try and brush their teeth (if you can) or give them some dental treats/toys that will also do the job effectively.

Tip #5 - Let Your Dog Run Freely... Every Now & Then

Our last tip for canine longevity is to limit the time you let your dog roam freely when you’re out on their walk. Letting them off the leash might feel great, but there’s an array of dangers lurking in wait in the bushes. Poisons, disease, wildlife and traffic accidents can all seriously damage your dog’s health and well-being.

A degree of control also needs to be exercised when you’re at home, as roaming freely could bring them into contact with things like weed killers and other potential threats.
