Learning how to apply makeup professionally is something that can open you up to a world of professional possibilities. Want proof? Well, we have it and it comes from an exclusive interview with Melanie Burnicle on Learning Without Limits interview with Sarah Laidlow, an award-winning makeup artist and entrepreneur.
Is Makeup Artist a Good Career for You?
That depends on you, as it does take hard work and dedication, as well as the necessary drive from short studying a makeup courses online. You’ll also need the right personal traits, like organisation, great communication and, of course, aptitude.
So, without further ado, let’s get the word from the lady herself. Introducing Sarah Laidlaw!
“So, Sarah, Why did you become a makeup artist? ”
“Actually, I didn’t want to be a makeup artist at all at school, as I had my sights set on becoming a barrister or an architect. I never envisaged I’d ever be employed making makeup videos, working in film and TV or working in a salon, but after experiencing life briefly in law, I realised it wasn’t for me.
I started my career with one week’s work experience (although I didn’t know it at the time) with the world-renowned Tognini’s Hair Salon in Brisbane and I loved it. I thought no more of it, but at the end of the week, I was offered an apprenticeship to my surprise, which I wisely decided to take!”.
“I Deferred University & Never Went Back”
“Initially, I was just supposed to be on 3-month probation over Christmas, followed by me going to university afterwards. However, along the way, I decided upon a career change, as the makeup artist industry was clearly for me. I deferred university, to begin with, but ultimately, I never went back.
My mum also told me to aim to be the best at whatever job I was in, so that’s what I did. After 6 months of hair styling in the salon, I realised it was exhausting, so I branched out on my own and started learning makeup while working in fashion, TV and bridal work. It felt natural and since then, I’ve not looked back”.
“My Advice? Don’t Focus On the End Goal Too Much!”
“If I had to give some career counselling advice, it would be not to become too fixated on your long-term goals. If I had, I would have missed the exceptional opportunity that I was able to grasp and have the career I have had so far. It all started at Tognini’s and I’m so glad it did!
Today, I have my dream job that offers me lots of chances to get creative and have fun. Of course, awards are great, but it’s the work that matters. I get lots of variety, as I might be doing a makeup demo one day, fashion makeup the next day and hairstyling for TV the next”.
