Venturing out into the big bad professional world after finishing full-time education can be more than a little daunting, right? Career counselling can teach you a lot of things, but being calm in the face of a grilling from a hiring manager can make anyone break out into a cold sweat.

Don’t worry though, as it’s the same for everyone and there are steps you can take to make things easier - something you’ll find out a lot more about by reading on.

Why are job interview questions so specific?

Well, depending on the job you’re applying for, anyone involved in recruitment online or in-person is going to want to know what sort of person you are. They’ll want to know what your short and long term goals are, as well as your suitability for the role in questions, so their questions need to be specific.

So, What are some good tips for job interviews  For Newbies?

Being the best version of yourself takes preparation and the right approach in general, so now we’re going to look at exactly that - how to make sure you’re bringing your A-game.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice

Your interviewing ability is something that can be developed over time, so it’s a good idea to practice what you might say, either in a mirror or with a member of the family beforehand. You’ll be surprised how much more natural and confident it can make you in the interview itself, as you’ll have built up some ‘muscle memory’ rather than going through it cold on the big day.

  • Don’t Leave Everything Until the Last Minute

While it may be ok for some to cram revision in for an exam the night before, this approach to job interviews will just leave you stressed and unprepared. So, our next nugget of career counselling wisdom is to tell you to leave yourself plenty of time for everything, including getting clothes ready, travelling to the interview location and everything else you need to do.

  • Research the Company You’re Applying To

There’s nothing more likely to impress an interviewer than an interviewee who's done his or her homework on the company they’re applying to. Most companies will have a website, so just spend some time learning about the company’s ethos, core business and unique selling points. You’re likely to get asked something about it too, so make sure you learn even just a few facts ahead of time.

  • Never, Ever Be Late…Ever!

There are some universal do’s and don’ts when it comes to job interviews and one of them relates to punctuality. It doesn’t matter how much work you’ve put into your personal development plan and interview prep if you’re late, as tardiness will usually result in an instant black mark against your name. So, do what you need to NOT be late, which ideally means arriving about 10 minutes early.

There are many aspects to interviews that need to be mastered, but the good news is that anything can be worked on. If you’d like more detailed information on interview prep, try looking at this Government Page that features lots of tips and videos on how to prep for specific industries.
