Being able to absorb new information quickly is undoubtedly an intelligent trait, but being a slow learner does not indicate lower intelligence - far from it. It's all about what works for the individual; some learning processes take longer than others.
So, without further delay, let's get the word from Cherie herself and get the lowdown on what drove her to be able to complete two separate OCA short courses online in just 30 days.
So, Cherie, how did you manage to do two Micro-Credentials in just one month?
Well, I'm something of a perfectionist, if truth be told. You could say that it's my mild OCD that drove me to achieve what I was able to. I also have a Diploma in child care from high school that I wanted to build on with these short courses online, so I was pretty driven to succeed.
Honestly, though, the main reason I was able to complete them so quickly was that the training was much easier than I thought it would be.
What was the best thing about the courses?
I loved being able to take modules when I wanted to, giving me lots of control over my learning. Each module was video-based, and I was able to learn through my phone, which I found much easier than previous text-based courses I'd taken. However, the main thing was the work placement, as it allowed me to get some hands-on experience - it was great!
Was there anything you struggled with during your studies?
There were occasions when I didn't quite understand the meaning of a question or two, or exactly what I was being asked to do. It wasn't a big problem, though, and that's thanks to the great help provided by my course mentor Susan. She was fantastic throughout my online short courses, and her help allowed me to complete them at the same time as having three kids to look after!
What was it that drew you towards studying with OCA?
Well, I did a Google search, as everyone does, and I saw many options available. However, when I came across OCA, the ability to learn in my own time, on my own terms, was just what I was looking for. As a mother of three kids, I rarely get much time to myself, so the easy-to-digest modules of the courses provided by OCA seemed to fit me perfectly.
What advice would you give anyone interested in studying online?
Just that it's great, convenient and fun, so you shouldn't be afraid to study online. Just stick with it, and it'll work out. Even when your personal circumstances are complicated, like mine, training like the OCA short courses I took makes it possible. Especially with all the support that's provided, it's much easier than you might think to learn new skills.
