As a makeup artist, one of the most essential things in your professional life is your makeup kit, which will contain all the tools of your trade. What’s more, it’s your responsibility to keep it clean, well-organised and stocked with all the products and equipment you need to work on your clients.

What should be in a make-up kit?

We'll get onto what you should have in terms of essentials shortly, but as you’ll discover at the outset of a makeup course, you’ll need to be able to create a wide range of looks for people of various types and colours of skin. It’s something many find out the hard way when a client asks for a type of makeup, and they just don’t have it.

So, what's in your professional makeup kit?

Okay, now we look at the basics that you should create your makeup around. Of course, you can carry more products and equipment than listed here, but it still represents a good start. Underneath each item, you’ll find a recommended hero product.

Item #1 - A Foundation Brush

As your beauty courses online will show you, the foundation is what every other part of your client’s makeup will be based upon, so possessing a good foundation brush is key. A good one will make the job of creating an even complexion that much simpler.

Recommended MUA hero product: Delilah Foundation Brush

Item #2 - A Concealer Brush

Essential for helping clients with red patches and breakouts is the concealer brush, which can rejuvenate tired-looking skin. A quality concealer brush will be sufficiently firm to hold the product and blend well, with dome-shaped brushes being better for cream & liquid concealers.

Item #3 - Shadow Blender Brush

As online training  in makeup teaches, eye shadow plays a  big part in the looks that a pro makeup artist  will create. As such, having a good shadow blender brush - that’s typically super-soft - is a must. Look for one that’s small enough for precision and dense enough to pick up the right amount of product.

Recommended MUA hero product: Beautypie Blend Brush

Item #4 - Mascara

Any client makeup work you carry out will also involve the lashes, as the eyes are framed by any look. So, a great mascara should be at the top of your shopping list. A good quality mascara will offer both length and fullness to the lashes and won’t form unsightly clumps.

Recommended MUA hero product: Revlon Super-length Mascara

Item #5 - Lash Curlers

As a makeup pro, part of your personal development will involve learning how to make your client’s natural lashes look attractive using lash curlers. Lifting the natural beauty of the eyes, mascara makes the area ‘pop’ and makes the wearer’s eyes seem more wide open than they are.

Recommended MUA hero product: Tweezerman Lash Curlers.
